I have a question about two of the games in the Support List. Both games
are by Origin: Strike Commander and (I forgot the other). Both are
listed as something like "SB and Aria same?" Does this mean that they
support Aria natively, but when choosing Aria it sounds the same as SB?
I ask about the native sound, because I just bought Origin's System Shock
and it does not directly support Aria. I can get the music to work if I
either load MIDITSR2 with midi-loopback and choose GMIDI or choose Gravis
Ultrasound (??). The Ultrasound option only works when my system is in a
certain mode (I don't remember if I needed to load volume.exe or sb201.exe
to get this mode). The ultrasound option is preferred because it does
NOT need any memory consuming TSR's (MIDITSR2) loaded first. Both the
GMIDI and GUS options sound the same anyways--kinda crappy in the intro
(regular sound blaster sounds better) and then pretty good in the game.
Either way, I could not get soundFX to work (only in choosing sound
blaster for music and SoundFX). I would think that IF Strike Commander had
native Aria as a sound option, that Origin would continue to support it.
Mind you, I have never seen Strike Commander or any other games from
Origin that supported native Aria. By the way, it looks like System
Shock uses the 32-bit AIL drivers. That was how I got GUS to work in
music only. Replacing any other driver did not work. I hope I can get
native sound in Wing Commander III. I decided recently not to buy any
new games unless they have native Aria sound. Maybe I need a new card
like SB-AWE32 or GUS-Max, but since I can't afford that now, I'll stick
with my Aria.
Later.
